Natural Egg Dyes for Spring & Easter, Including Tea

Whether you’re hosting a grand garden gathering or simply seeking a moment of quiet, artistic reset, Easter is the perfect excuse to infuse your surroundings with natural wonder. Forget the neon plastic kits of yesteryear; we’re returning to our roots with a DIY that is as masterfully-crafted as our botanical blends.

At Stash we believe flavor and color should always be a feeling. This spring, we’re taking our obsession with tea to dyed eggs for a sophisticated, earth-toned palette that feels like a slow walk through a sun-drenched meadow.

Here is how to transform your kitchen into a botanical studio and stain your eggs in style using the very same teas you love to sip.

The Palette: Flavor You Can See

To achieve a range of colors, choose your teas with care:

  • For a Deep, Malty Brown: Use our English Breakfast Black Tea. It’s strong, earthy hue will imbue the shells with a rich, antique finish.

  • For a Golden, Radiant Yellow: Reach for Turmeric Chai Herbal Tea. The turmeric root creates a warm yellow glow that radiates from within. For a softer yellow, try our Lemon Ginger Herbal Tea.

  • For a Mellow, Herbaceous Green: Steep our Premium Green Tea. This Japanese-style blend offers delivers a subtle, re-centering pale green. Yes, you can also use Moroccan Mint Green Tea.

  • For a Briny, Marine Blue Green: Use Pomegranate Raspberry Herbal Tea. This rooibos blend tints the shells with a surprising under-the-sea hue.

  • For a Stormy, Twilight Grey: Try our Raspberry Hibiscus Herbal Tea. The hibiscus stains eggshells with grey blue to purple hues, while the other ingredients add yellow or orange, for a dark grey violet.

  • For a Deep, Soulful Blue: Hibiscus alone can result in blues and purples, but our hibiscus is blended with other ingredients that can change the color, so we have to step away from tea for this one. The natural way to dye blue is simple though: red cabbage. Shred a fourth to a half a cabbage and steep it like you would tea in the recipe below.

  • For a Rosy, Warm Red or Pink: Again, we natural dyes do better than tea at creating robust reds and pinks. Red onion skins or beets are your best options. Slice beets for pink or shred for a darker red. For onion skins, collect as many dry, papery skins as possible. Simmer them in the water for 30 minutes before draining.

  • Other Natural Dyes to Try: Matcha (green), spinach (green), turmeric powder (yellow), yellow onion skins (orange), blueberries (blue/lavender), and coffee (beige/brown).

The Ritual: How to Infuse the Moment

  1. Prepare the Infusion: In a small saucepan, bring two cups of water to a boil. Add 4–6 tea bags of your chosen Stash blend. Don't shy away from more than a few to ensure a punchy, concentrated pigment. Let them steep for 15 minutes before removing the tea bags.

  2. Add the Catalyst: Stir in one tablespoon of white vinegar. This helps the natural colors bond to the eggshells.

  3. The Slow Steep: Carefully lower hard-boiled eggs into the tea. For a light, breezy tint, leave them for 30 minutes. For a deep, velvety finish, let them bathe in the fridge overnight.

  4. The Reveal: Remove the eggs with care and let them dry on a wire rack. The result is a collection of earthy, calming tones that look as if they were plucked straight from a rustic dream.

  5. The Flourish (Optional): If you want to add elegance to your design, you can use a white wax crayon to draw designs before dyeing. For a fresher take on the same theme, herbs and leaves will resist the tea as it works. You’ll need nylon or cheesecloth to hold the leaves in place while the eggs soak, but the effect is worth the effort.

Why Tea and Foods?

Because you deserve a balanced lifestyle that prioritizes quality without the theatrical fuss. Tea and food dyeing is minimally processed, using natural ingredients that honor the inherent beauty of the season.

So, grab your favorite mug, brew an extra cup for yourself, and get to work. It’s time to infuse every holiday with a little Stash magic!
