Grown at a high altitude of 1200 meters at the Chafang Tea Factory, Golden Monkey tea is a high quality black tea with large leaves and an abundance of golden tips. It is golden amber in color with a hint of smoke and honey flavor.
This tea is from Yunnan province, an ancient province in southwestern China which borders Vietnam, Laos and Burma. This cloudy, misty, mountainous province has grown tea for 1700 years. The yun in Yunnan means "cloud". The tea plant itself is often considered a native of Yunnan, as 260 different varieties, some the size of large trees, can be found here.
Yunnan leads all other Chinese provinces in black tea production. Yunnan black teas are produced from a strain of ancient native broad leafed (dayeh) tea bushes which are also used for the famous medicinal Pu-erh tea. These tea bushes grow along the Lancang River in southern Yunnan province. They have a longer life span, earlier and stronger buds, fat shoots, and thick, soft leaves. As evidence of how important climate and soil conditions are to tea bushes, if this native broad leafed Dayeh strain is transplanted anywhere else in China, it produces the typical "China leaf" which is narrow, thin and dull in comparison. Transplant the same bush to its native environment, and it produces broad, thick, glossy, tippy leaves again.
According to legend, this particular tea grows in lofty and precipitous peaks making it difficult to pluck the leaves so local people trained monkeys to pluck the tea leaves, thus the unique name Golden Monkey.

"Golden Monkey loose tea is a family favorite - all of my sons and myself included love the rich, deep flavor. We drink it straight up and piping hot! It's the most requested loose tea from family and friends." - Joyce W. (Plant Administrator)
The first thing I noticed when I brewed a cup o Golden Monkey black tea was the aroma of freshly mowed hay experienced in my youth when farmers still raked the hay into piles and loaded it on wagons to transfer it to the barn. Then as I took my first sip I caught a note of the grape arbor with heavily ladened vines of scuppernong fruit in front of the barn. All in all a delightful experience of a strong bodied tea enjoyed in a wood fired mug purchased from a craftsman In the heart of Seagrove, North Carolina, pottery capital of the USA.
A nice, rich tea with subtle tones, no bitterness, just a rounded flavor. I love this tea and STASH- great company, great service, fabulous tea!
I am enjoying this tea, great flavor and finish. One minor point is that the package was not resealable.
Thank you so much for leaving a review Tack, all of our loose leaf teas come in resealable packaging. We sent you an email with more details.
This is my favorite black tea. It is complex, rich, deserves sipping at a time when you can stop and enjoy it. I keep trying others, because I like variety, but this one remains my top pick.
Excellent tea with a smooth taste and warming feel.
This tea is sweet tasting without the addition of sweetner. I also has hints of vanilla in it. It is absolutely delicious.
