Product Details

Matcha is the powdered leaf tea used in the traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony. To make Matcha, fresh green tea leaves from the finest Gyokuro green tea are ground into a fine powder using a stone mill. For the tea ceremony the powdered Matcha is measured with a chashaku (bamboo spoon) and is placed in a chawan (serving bowl), hot water is added, then whipped with a chasen (bamboo whisk) until frothy. The thick frothy tea is sipped right from the bowl. Two drinks can be prepared from Matcha for the ceremony--Usucha made with 1.5 heaping chashaku, or Koicha made with 3 heaping chashaku. Matcha has a bright jade green color and an unexpected distinctive flavor that is mellow and slightly sweet.

Tip: For home use, add 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of Matcha to 2-3 ounces of just below boil fresh water. Add more water to desired taste. Stir or whisk until frothy. Refrigeration of Matcha is recommended.

Great Value, Great Quality

I recently received Stash Matcha as a holiday gift. This matcha comes sealed tightly in a pull tab can, and then inside a sealed foil pouch, to ensure the highest quality and freshness possible (it also includes one of those little anti-humidity packets). When opened, its smell is reminiscent of buttery spring grass, intoxicatingly fresh and green. The color is bright green, as it should be.

I have purchased matcha before from Japanese companies (main offices in Japan, sold in their stores here). The quality of Stash's matcha is comparable to theirs. I was so happily surprised by this, as matcha tends to be pricey, and Stash sells it for about half the price. Also, as mentioned by another reviewer, the expiry date is short, but this is to keep the integrity of the product intact as much as possible. Matcha is not meant to be kept long, or it loses its unique flavor as air oxidizes it.

Just received the order with my matcha and while the quality is very good, the expiration date is less than 3 months away. I would have expected it to be good for a bit longer than that. Kind of disappointing.
