Though the eyes of the Daruma are intentionally left blank when sold, the recipient of the doll is meant to fill in one eye upon receiving it and setting a personal goal, and then fill in the other eye when their goal has been fulfilled. This custom has led to the popular Japanese phrase “both eyes open”, referring to opening the second eye and accomplishing the task that lays ahead of you.
