Black currants (Ribes nigrum) are small, round berries that retain the withered remains of the flower. Wild currants are native to temperate regions, however cultivated species have European and Asian ancestry. The black currant is the largest of the currants - up to 1/2 inch or more in size.
If sweetened, black currants can be eaten fresh as they are fruity, but quite tart. Black currants are primarily used for jam, however, they are also used in baked goods (such as scones) and made into sauces and syrups. A famous French cordial, Creme de Cassis, is made in Burgundy from locally grown black currants. The black currant also has a reputation as a medicinal plant, as a cure for sore throats. It is also very rich in vitamin C-- half a dozen berries has a higher dose than a lemon!
At Stash tea we blend the highest quality, most flavorful botanicals with juicy black currant flavor to produce our Wild Blackcurrant herbal tea--hibiscus from China with its purple-red color adds tartness, lemongrass from Peru, Valencia orange peel from the United States, and rosehips from Chile. We then add pure, natural flavor extracts from fresh ripe black currants to the blend. The result is a delicious, fruity tea that is both sweet and tangy, and very flavorful. This tea can be enjoyed any time of the day since it has no caffeine. It also makes a great thirst-quenching iced tea.
