Stash Organic Chai Spice

Chai is enjoyed in India in cities and the smallest of villages, and usually is offered to every visitor to a home. In Northern India, where Chai is the beverage of choice, tiny tea stalls line the streets where all day long "chaiwallas" (tea vendors) brew and serve tea.

Chai is usually brewed very strong with lots of sugar and milk and is often concentrated. Traditional Indian Chai combines rich black tea that is boiled in milk and flavored with local spices such as sweet cinnamon, sharp clove, penetrating cardamom, and occasionally black peppercorns, pungent ginger and hot red chilies, and then sweetened with sugar. This spicy tea is brewed in a samovar - type vessel and is always served very hot. Hurried customers often pour a little Chai in the saucer to cool it before drinking.

For our interpretation of this classic Indian drink, we blend organic Assam black and green tea, and organic cinnamon, clove, ginger and cardamom. The brewed tea is very aromatic with a flavor that is slightly sweet, strong and penetrating, with rich, full bodied lingering flavor notes. This tea is very pleasant plain, or with a splash of milk (regular or evaporated) and sugar added. It is exceptional any time of day, as a rich morning cup, an enjoyable dessert tea, or as a special taste treat.

Assam is the birthplace of Indian tea and the largest tea growing area in the world with more than 2000 tea gardens. Our Organic Assam black and green teas come from the Sewpur Tea Estate in the Tinsukia district of Assam. Sewpur began producing tea in 1906 and now produces 100 metric tons of Organic tea each year. The organic Assam black tea is characterized by distinctive malty flavor, which the best Assams are known for. This full - bodied tea has a warm reddish brown color in the cup, and an invigorating taste that refreshes the body and spirit.

The organic green Assam is characterized by a silver tint on the underside of the tea leaf which signifies strength, freshness and sparkle which are prominent in Assam teas. Sewpur's teas are certified by the renowned "Institute for MarketEcology" in Switzerland, which is an IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements) member, recognized worldwide.

Traditional Chai Spice Recipe

Single Serving

1 tea bag Stash Chai Spice Tea (or 1/2 Tbsp. loose tea)
7 ounces fresh water
1 ounce milk*
1 Tbsp. sugar

Bring water to a boil and pour over tea. Steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove tea and add milk and sugar.

1/2 Gallon

10 tea bags Stash Chai Spice Tea (or 5 Tbs. loose tea)
56 ounces fresh water (7 cups)
1 cup milk*
1/2 cup sugar

Bring water to a boil and pour over tea. Steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove tea and add milk and sugar.

Stove Top Method (for a creamier more flavorful drink)

10 tea bags Stash Chai Spice Tea (or 5 Tbs. loose tea)
56 ounces fresh water (7 cups)
1 cup milk*
1/2 cup sugar

Mix water, milk and sugar in a sauce pan. Add tea. Place on stove top and bring to a boil. Let boil 2 to 4 minutes. Remove tea.

*For a creamier drink evaporated milk may be substituted for regular milk.
