| Rose Lychee Congou | |
|
Although China produces a lot of great black teas, very little black tea is consumed in China. Rose Lychee Congou is one notable exception. The word "congou" in the name is derived from "kung-fu" which means "produced through skill and effort". This refers to the extra processing that the Chinese go through to produce black teas instead of their more common green teas.
The rose in the name refers to the scent added by exposure to aromatic petals of "tea" roses. This lends a mild but pleasant flowery fragrance to this tea.
The lychee in the name is a variant of the word litchi which is a very popular fruit in southern China. The litchi is a round fruit, a little over an inch in diameter, with a tough knobby skin. The white pulp inside has a delicate flavor somewhat like a muscat grape. The juice of the litchi is added to this tea to give it a light, fruity, slightly sweet flavor.
The happy combination of smooth black tea, subtle rose fragrance and exotic litchi makes this an easy tea to enjoy. This beautiful amber brew is very pleasant to drink in the afternoon or early evening and it goes well with cookies and cakes.
