Assam is a district in northeastern India that lies on the Indian-Burmese border. It produces more black tea than any other area on earth, with the probable exception of a few places in China. Assam's tea gardens cover some four hundred thousand acres of verdant rolling plains on both sides of the mighty Brahmaputra River. From the air, one gets the impression of a gigantic billiard table stretching as far as the eye can see.
Assam is proof that not all fine quality tea has to be high grown. In fact, this rainy valley is the birthplace of Indian tea. An Englishman, Robert Bruce discovered the plant growing wild here in 1823, and the first commercial lot of tea ever produced outside of China -- eight chests in all -- came from Assam in 1839.
The renowned Manohari Tea Estate is situated in the upper region of Assam, at an elevation of 390 feet above sea level. The estate covers some 1800 acres with over 1000 acres planted with tea bushes. Almost three million pounds of black and green tea are produced annually from selected clonal tea bushes at the Khongea Estate.
If you like a strong tea, our Manohari Estate Assam FTGFOP Second Flush, is your cup. It is pungent, malty tasting and full-bodied with a dark leaf. It is an excellent afternoon tea and goes well with a splash of milk and sugar.
