Our Special Edition Christmas Eve tea was created especially for the holidays by our master blenders. This festive loose tea blend brews a ruby red cup that is tangy, fruity, sweet and fragrant. Each ingredient for this blend was chosen for its special characteristics.
One of the key ingredients of Christmas Eve, Chinese hibiscus, is tart, slightly lemony in flavor and adds its brilliant red color. Hibiscus is an evergreen plant with leaves similar to those of a maple tree. Its large flowers are usually red but may be orange to purplish-red. The flowers last only a day, with new buds every day during harvest. Stash sources the finest whole hibiscus flowers from China and cuts them just before blending to ensure the tea blend is as flavorful as possible.
Cinnamon, one of the oldest known spices, is native to Sri Lanka where it thrives in the hot moist climate. Cinnamon comes from the bark of an evergreen laurel tree that has shiny leaves, yellowish white flowers and dark blue berries. The longest and best pieces of the bark are hand rolled and dried into quills. When they reach the right moisture they are tan in color, and smooth, thin and brittle. Cinnamon is naturally sweet with a delightfully spicy, woody fragrance due to the essential oils found in its bark. Its taste is intense and warm.
The sweet orange is the most popular of all citrus fruits. It originated in China where it received its botanical name "Citrus Sinensis". Stash Tea sources its orange peel from the best California Valencia oranges. The orange peel is made only from the orange colored outer peel which is juicy and fresh, and not the white inner membrane which has a bland and bitter taste.
Stash Peppermint is exclusively from top quality Oregon grown peppermint, considered the world's finest. Oregon's deep rich soil, moist cool winters, and dry sunny summers provide mint growers with the natural tools to produce this fine peppermint. Stash Tea purchases its peppermint leaf directly from Oregon farmers. It is sent from Oregon fields to the Stash Tea plant where it is packaged to protect the freshness and menthol content.
Lemongrass is a tall, tropical grass which has a wonderful fresh lemon aroma and flavor. This beautiful plant is found in India, tropical Asia, Africa, South America, Australia, and in the states of Florida and California in the U.S. The essential oil in lemongrass, citral, gives lemongrass its distinctive citrus flavor. In fact, citral is often used as a substitute for lemon oil. Lemongrass adds a fresh, slightly tart lemon flavor, to this blend
Roses with their prickly stems and fragrant flowers turn to hips in the autumn. Dog Rose (Rosa canina) is the major source for rose hips which are used for Jam, syrup, wine and tea. The hips are also rich in many vitamins such as C, E, K, and B vitamins. We use the highest quality rosehips from Chile with their sharp, fruity flavor.
Star Anise, native to Southern China and Vietnam, is the fruit of a small evergreen tree that bears small yellow flowers. The fruit is a very pretty spice with the shape of an irregular eight-pointed star. Its Chinese name "Pak Kok" means eight points. Although not related to anise or fennel, star anise has a similar aroma and flavor. It has a black licorice-like flavor and a distinct sweet and lingering aroma
Cultivated in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, China and India, ginger is one of the world's oldest and most popular spices. The edible portion of the ginger plant is the root. Ginger is best known as a spice used in cooking, especially for Asian dishes, and for gingerbread. It has also been used as a medicinal herb since the 17th century to settle the stomach. Ginger has a warm, woody aroma and a flavor with a slight bite, and a sweet, rich aftertaste. Fresh, pungent ginger root from Japan is added for its rich, warming quality.
