Tea Market Report April 21 to April 25, 2008
Markets this week - Mombasa eased for the most part, Blantyre was
largely firm to dearer and Jakarta also advanced. Colombo was rather
irregular whilst in North India all tea sold well, but at lower levels
than last week & South India was quite firm for CTC although it tended
lower for orthodox. The uptake of tea in Malawi and Indonesia was higher
but lower in Mombasa. The weather reports this week indicate fairly normal
conditions in most growing countries and the rain has continued in Kenya.
The season in North India is going well and second flush is not far off
now. The other main origins are enjoying more or less normal weather.
North America has been active while the EU & UK markets were moderate
operators in their favoured centres. Pakistan packers were moderately
active in Mombasa while Afghanistan dealers were busy at lower levels and
Karachi bazaar traders likewise. Egyptian buyers reduced their purchasing
in Mombasa and Middle East bought actively in Colombo after the auction
gap of last week. Poland has seen steady wholesale and retail sales while
in Russia, the weather is springlike but tea consumption is reportedly
healthy.
North India has seen heavy crop for the last 7-10 days. In Kenya, both
sides of the Rift have seen good rainfall and crop has started to
increase. In Malawi, the weather has been dry, pruning is well underway,
some factories have closed for maintenance and crop intakes have declined.
Most growing areas in Sri Lanka have experienced bright mornings with
evening showers leading to a slight increase in crop. Indonesia has seen
less rain and intakes are starting to slowly decrease with quality
improving. Vietnam has seen heavy rain and the main plucking season comes
closer. The season in Argentina is all but over.
