The same velvety cocoa used in the Italian dessert tiramisu adds richness to this choice blend of black teas. Delicious.
Tiramisu has been described as "heaven in your mouth". This luscious Italian dessert is sometimes called the "Tuscan Trifle" because of its origins in Siena, in the northwestern province of Tuscany.
Tiramisu was first created for a special visit from a Florentine Grand Duke, Cosimo de Medici the third, in the 19th century. In the Dukes honor, the dessert was dubbed "zuppa del duca" (the "Duke's Soup"). The Duke returned to Florence with the recipe for this wonderful new dessert where it became popular among artists and intellectuals.
Stories are also told that Tiramisu (which translates "pick-me-up") was a favorite of Venice's courtesans, who needed to fortify themselves between their amorous encounters.
The original recipe was a combination of custard, eggs, ladyfingers, cream, coffee, brandy or rum, sugar and cocoa. Recently the custard has been replaced with Mascarpone, a triple cream cheese made from the milk of cows that are fed a special diet of herbs, grasses, and flowers, which creates a unique taste that is fresh and delicious. The Ladyfingers (known in Italy as "savoiardi") are sweet little sponge cakes. The result is a light, creamy, chocolatey dessert with a hint of liqueur.
Over the years, many versions of Tiramisu have been created such as adding berries, removing the ladyfingers for the texture of cheese cake, and low fat variations.
For our Tiramisu dessert tea, we blend choice black teas with natural tiramisu flavor and the same velvety cocoa used in the classic dessert. The result is a rich, smooth tea with sweet aroma, kissed with chocolate. This tea is best enjoyed with a touch of sugar. Perfect as a dessert tea or special treat. Heavenly!
