The pomegranate fruit is native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India and has been cultivated and naturalized over the whole Mediterranean region since ancient times. The tree was introduced into California by Spanish settlers in the mid-18th century. In the U.S., it is grown mainly in the drier parts of California and Arizona. The tree adapts well to container culture and will sometimes fruit in a greenhouse.
Calendula flowers were originally named by the ancient Romans. They observed that the flowers were in bloom on the first day, or "calends" of every month; therefore, the name. The Romans grew the flowers simply because they were pretty, and the fact that they bloomed almost continuously was an added bonus.
