Product Details

From the Fujian province of China comes this very distinctive tea with its exotic smoky flavor. After plucking, the leaves are withered over cypress or pine wood fires. After the rolling process, they are placed into wooden barrels until they begin to emit their own pleasant aroma. As a final step they are placed in bamboo baskets and hung on racks over smoky pine fires where they dry and absorb the essence of the smoke.

The finished tea leaves are thick and black and when steeped in hot water produce a bright reddish-orange cup of tea. The flavor is very assertive and appeals to those looking for a bold cup of tea.

In recent years, Lapsang-Souchong has begun to grow in popularity and has become the favorite tea of many who also appreciate single-malt Scotch whisky and fine cigars. It was once known as a man's tea but more and more women are drinking it as well.

Our Lapsang-Souchong tastes particularly good with salty and spicy dishes and also with cheese. Many tea lovers report that they enjoy drinking it outdoors, especially after any intense activity. You may also wish to try adding a pinch of Lapsang-Souchong to a cup of English Breakfast blend to add a whole new layer of flavor notes to savor.

Like Tea by a Warm Campfire

This tea has a light, smoky scent; but it doesn't overwhelm you with a smoky flavor (unlike caravan tea). Close your eyes and picture yourself drinking tea by a warm campfire; the aroma of the smoke from the fire, the smooth, earthy flavor of the tea.

A little goes a long way

This is a truly delicious tea, and it would be wildly popular if more people knew the secret: make it weak. Really weak. Waaay weaker than the package suggests. Don't try for the ""red-brown liquor."" Use just a pinch per cup. The result is a light, translucent brew with an intriguingly smoky aroma and surprisingly refreshing taste. Try it. You'll thank me."

Not for Lapsang Souchong enthusiasts

I love Lapsang Souchong. That said, I have to agree with another reviewer that this is definitely not the best out there. Comparing the Stash tea to another brand, even the smell is noticeably weaker. Not as smoky. If you have never tried this kind of tea, this might be an OK place to start since it's a little weaker and Lapsang is an acquired taste. However, if you are a Lapsang enthusiast I'd pass on this one and look elsewhere. Bummer, since I usually love Stash tea.

Weak, Anemic Lapsang

I have bought Lapsang Souchong from Stash for several years and have always enjoyed the strong, smokey flavor typical of this tea. Sadly, the most recent batch that I purchased is so weak and insipid tasting that it is actually unrecognizable as Lapsang Souchong. One can simply smell the tea and realize that something is sorely missing. I hope Stash will restock with true, traditional Lapsang Souchong but I must agree with several other reviewers that something is terribly amiss with the current source. If, like me, you are a devotee of traditional Lapsang Souchong this current product is not for you.

Premium smoked tea, unique flavor

Lapsang souchong is definitely an acquired taste that is not for everyone. I love it's very smoky taste and aroma especially for morning or afternoon tea breaks of in the evening by a crackling fire. It's not easy to find in stores so it's a great gift for an adventurous tea lover who wants to try something really different.

Tea for Scotch Lovers

This tea is best appreciated by folks who enjoy a robust smokey scotch like Laphroaig or Lavagulin. It's a sipping tea, meant to be enjoyed straight up without any modifiers like sugar or cream. Lapsang appears to be a love it/hate it flavor for most people. My only negative comment is that the batches seem to be variable in intensity, but that can be adjusted by adding more leaves to the pot or by steeping a bit longer. I think the idea of using it for a marinade or perhaps putting soaked leaves in the grill to add flavor to meats is a good plan.
