Not bone china
May 24, 2013

Bone china is defined as a translucent, thin ware - and it is easy to spot. Which is why when I gave this as a gift I was appalled to see what looks like a novelty cup. It's far too heavy and you can't see any light through it (a characteristic of bone china: when you hold it up to light, you can see through it slightly because of its translucence and whiteness) thus leading me to believe that this simply cannot be bone china.

Now, to be fair, I was shocked at how cheaply this was priced, but I thought it must be on sale. For a simple novelty tea cup and saucer, $9.00 isn't a good price. You can go to an antique store and pick up real bone china for cheaper.

I'm disappointed, and what's more, the person I gave this to loves and collects tea sets - imagine my embarrassment! If you want a pretty (albeit overpriced) tea cup, this'll do - however if you're seeking nice bone china - look elsewhere! I give it 2 stars because though it's not what I wanted, it is cute.
