Product Details

Stash Decaffeinated Chai Spice is made with black teas that are naturally decaffeinated using the CO2 method. This process allows the tea leaves to retain the most flavor possible and leaves only about 2-6% of its original caffeine content. Blended with cinnamon, clove, ginger and cardamom, this tea still has all the spicy, rich flavor of a caffeinated chai. The brewed tea is very aromatic, with a powerful taste and lingering flavor that is quintessentially chai in nature. This tea is delicious plain or with milk and sugar.

Some of the finest black teas in the world come from India, the world's leading producer of tea. Included in these teas are the robust and malty Assams, the prized muscatel Darjeelings, and the well-balanced Nilgiris. However, most tea consumed in India is not enjoyed for its subtle flavor nuances, but is instead blended with sweet and pungent spices to make the popular beverage chai.

Chai is usually brewed very strong, often concentrated, with lots of sugar and milk. Traditional Indian chai combines rich black tea that is boiled in milk with local spices such as cinnamon, clove, cardamom, and occasionally black peppercorns, ginger, and red chilies. The drink is then sweetened with sugar.

  • Cups to Grams:
    • 8 grams makes 3-4 cups
    • 25 grams makes 10-15 cups
    • 50 grams makes 20-25 cups
    • 100 grams makes 45-50 cups
    • 1 pound loose makes 180-200 cups
  • Ingredients: naturally decaffeinated black tea, cinnamon, ginger root, natural cinnamon flavor, clove oil, allspice, clove, nutmeg, cardamom oil
  • Steeping Instructions: 3-5 minutes at 190-209 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Caffeine: The decaffeination process does not remove all caffeine. Decaf teas contain 4 mg or less of caffeine per cup.

My Favorite Chai

I had my first taste of Chai when I was in Manhattan at Christmastime in 2001. My then-fiancé introduced me to it, and I quite liked it. Still, I drank chai infrequently until I came across Stash Chai Spice in 2006. I was immediately hooked, and have kept it on hand in my home ever since. (I have sampled numerous others, and Stash is still my favorite.)
In 2010, however, I began noticing a change in the taste of the caffeinated Stash Chai Spice. At first, I thought that I'd just gotten a box from a 'bad batch'. Soon, though, I realized that ALL of the boxes I purchased had the same 'off' flavor. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. This happened to coincide with the change in packaging, so I began buying the original over-wrapped packages (as those boxes seemed unaffected). Unfortunately, those eventually disappeared completely. I made the switch to decaf (the caffeine being inconsequential to me), and am pleased to say that, even in new packaging, the taste is perfect.

My friends and I became addicted to Chai Lattes a number of years ago and were enjoying them in the expensive coffee houses.

Luckily, I discovered Stash and have introduced all my friends and family to it. We stopped buying the lattes in the expensive coffee houses,and use our savings instead for other treats.

We make our chai lattes with a lovely dollop of sweetened condensed milk to have rich, sweet and fragrant chai lattes at any time of day or night. It is also the favourite hot drink of my youngest son.

I also include this with a bowl of sweetened condensed milk in the after dinner offerings to guests especially if Indian food has been on the menu.
